Looking to capitalize on iPhone popularity, automakers have been steadily coming out with their own apps, and Jeep has the latest: the travel-oriented TripCast.

Compatible with 3G, 3GS, and 4G Apple iPhones, TripCast features a database containing more than 250,000 outdoor recreation spots in the United States, letting users easily plot their path of travel and tag visited locations and locales. As a trip unfolds, media such as photos, video, audio clips, and status updates to Facebook and Twitter can be shared through the Jeep app. You can also view and explore other users’ journeys.

“TripCast enables everyone with a sense of adventure to plan a trip, share it with friends as their journey unfolds, and find new spots to explore,” said Mike Manley, president and CEO of Jeep. “This new app is perfect for Jeep fans, and anyone who enjoys getting out, having fun, and sharing that fun with friends. It also provides us with a unique way to connect with a wide array of consumers, exposing them to the unique Jeep lifestyle along the way.”

To sweeten the pot, the app is free and joins a growing line of Chrysler-sponsored iPhone programs. Visit jeeptripcast.com for more information.

Wired: BMW ConnectedDrive to Offer In-Car E-Mail, BlackBerry Functionality

Coming this fall, you can turn your BMW into a mobile Pony Express, should you own a BlackBerry smartphone. New technology will allow drivers to download and read their e-mail, or hear it read to them, thanks to BMW’s ConnectedDrive system.

With the system, BMW drivers who own BlackBerry smartphones will be able to receive e-mail via a Bluetooth function in the car. The extended connectivity applies to other BlackBerry functions, including calendar and contact sync. Additionally, users will be able to integrate BMW’s iDrive with the latest BlackBerry phone, the Pearl 3G, to wirelessly control its music functions.

We previously reported on the possible effort between the two brands, but this announcement solidifies their collaboration. Rollout begins on 2010 models equipped with the Professional navigation system and smartphone integration, and operational this fall.
