News & Rants: 2011 Ford Fiesta Preview

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

After six years of test-driving cars, I have to say that most of them seem to blend together in my head as a swirling, gelatinous mess of uninspiring silver and gray sheet metal. But this clearly doesn’t apply to the 2011 Ford Fiesta. It has a strong sense of self, a huge personality and its own brand of humor. If only I could find a date as interesting.
How would you like a car that starts at just under $14,000, gets better fuel economy than some hybrids (close to 40 mpg), has tons of safety and convenience features and is fun to drive? Me too!

The Fiesta comes in a sedan or hatchback and has nine bold and unique exterior color choices, such as Lime Squeeze, Bright Magenta Metallic and Yellow Blaze Tri-Coat. There are three different wheel choices, seven options for interior upholstery (imagine plum leather inside an Oxford White car) and customizable interior ambient lighting. Add to that an optional graphics package that lets you choose from more than 100 removable exterior graphics, and you’ve got a car whose style can be modified to fit almost anyone.

The Fiesta’s available Sync communications and entertainment system kept my daughter and I plugged in, even while stuck in traffic trying to get to the “American Idol” finale. Although Sync was a little spotty up in the Hollywood hills, I could make phone calls, have text messages read aloud, get turn-by-turn directions, stay in touch with news, stock quotes — even my horoscope — all through voice commands. This is where the humor comes in: On the day of my test drive, Sync told me that as a Leo, it was not a good day for me to travel. Ha!

Just like people, even the best-looking ones fall flat if that’s all they have to offer. However, the Fiesta looks great and is a blast to drive, too. Its small size and tight turning radius had me pulling all sorts of clever maneuvers in tight traffic. It had plenty of power to zip through the California hills, and the laminated acoustic windshield filtered out road and wind noise.

Along the route of our test drive, we stopped for lunch at the command center for the house featured in Simon Fuller’s “If I Can Dream” web series. The Fiesta is featured in the show, which follows young performers who are trying to make it big in Hollywood and their entire lives in the house and in the Fiesta are broadcast 24/7 at ificandream.com. So if you feel the need to take your reality TV viewing one step further, check out the live video as the cast members drive their Lime Squeeze Fiesta to casting calls and auditions. Fascinatingly creepy!

News & Rants: ‘American Idol’ Finale is a Rockin’ Fiesta for All

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

By now, most people know that Lee DeWyze won “American Idol” last night. My daughter and I experienced it in person at the Nokia Theatre just hours ago. Despite our blinged-out pink-neon “Crystal Sparkles” sign and very loud cheers, our favorite contestant Crystal Bowersox came in second to DeWyze. Not only did he win “American Idol,” but he also won a brand-spanking-new black Ford Fiesta sporting a red-and-white musical-note graphics that he designed (photo above). Crystal got one, too.

Catalin and I spent a full day with Ford and “American Idol.” The afternoon found us traipsing around from one Los Angeles hotspot to the next in our bright, bold lime green Fiesta. This was a bold move after the Fiesta’s hands-free Sync system told us our horoscope. We’re both Leos and it was a bad day for us to travel, according to our horoscope. Superstitions aside, our travels ultimately helped us determine that the cupholders in the Fiesta should actually be called cupcake holders since they held a Crumb cupcake perfectly.

The anticipation for the big “Idol” evening built up all day long. We couldn’t wait to get back to our hotel and get dolled up. The day culminated in our arrival at the Nokia Theatre in time for the “Idol” finale. We spent nearly an hour snaking our way through the lines—celebrity spotting all the way—to get into the theater. To be there in the flesh was amazing, especially when just 24 hours ago we were watching the show from the comfort of our own home. How surreal!

We took our seats behind and to the left of the judges’ stand. The warm-up guy got us up and on our feet, pumped and ready to welcome in the judges one by one. “When I say Randy, you say Jackson. Randy! Jackson! Randy! Jackson!”

We sang along to the “Idol” contestants’ songs, dancing in our seats. While we enjoyed the entire experience, the guest performers seemed oddly out of sync with “Idol’s” young audience. We were also busy trying to time when to hold up our sign so it’d coincide with a camera scanning the audience. Did you see it? You know, it was the bright pink one held way up high, waving obnoxiously back and forth and blocking the view of the people behind us.

Our travels in the 2011 Ford Fiesta and the 2010 “American Idol” finale will go down as one of the most memorable nights of my daughter’s life. And I have to say it’ll be up there for me, as well.
