Facebook Phishing: Can Become Pandemic
Thursday, May 21st, 2009
A serious threat to all facebook users is on! People are receiving emails with “Hello” (or something similar) in the Subject Line and a URL (web address) in the message. Today’s phishing attacks for example feature areps.at or brunga.at in the message. If you are a Facebook member and click on the link, it will take you to a phishing website and if you do not notice the web address, which is different than the legal Facebook web address, you may get infected by this virus. Once you log in to this phishing website, with your user name and password the site then captures the login information, logins into your account and sends the same phishing message to everyone in your group. Leaving you unable to enter your account and the phishing attack now sent to all your friends. Now if your friends do the same mistake, we are looking at a pandemic in action!
The phishing websites are Areps.at, Bests.at, Kirgo.at, Nutpick.at, and Brunga.at.
Don’t give this site your information. If you do, it will proceed to send all of your friends a message telling them to go to Areps.at, and hence, the scam will continue to spread like wildfire.
As a basic rule, never ever click on emails which look suspicious. If you do want to log on to your account always type the web address yourself and never go through the email link. If you follow these steps, you’ll never again fall prey to these attacks.
Also, knowledge is power and friends help each other out. So, be a friend and let others you know about today’s attacks and keep them from losing their accounts.
