Wiper blades are one of the cheapest safety equipment on your car, which routinely gets neglected. They are very important maybe not as much as brakes, to keep the driver and the passengers safe.

The blades get cracked, split, torn, brittle or worn.

According to the research, ninety percent of all driving decisions are based on a clear unobstructed view of the road, which means good visibility is absolutely essential — especially during wet weather when vision may be obscured by water, road splash, sleet or snow on the windshield. But good visibility requires wipers that are in good condition. If the wipers are chattering, streaking or otherwise failing to wipe cleanly and consistently, you need new blades — NOW!

Most experts say wiper blades should be replaced every six to twelve months for optimum performance and driving visibility. That’s because wiper blades don’t last forever. Natural rubber deteriorates over time. Halogen-hardened rubber as well as synthetic rubber provides longer life. But eventually all blade materials fall victim to environmental factors. Exposure to sunlight and ozone causes the rubber to age, even if the wipers aren’t used much. This tends to be more of a problem on vehicles that are parked outside in the hot sun all day.

Cold weather can affect blade life, too. Freezing temperatures makes rubber hard and brittle, which increases the tendency to crack and split. The holders can also become clogged with ice and snow, preventing the holder from distributing spring tension evenly over the blade. The blade “freezes up” and leaves streaks as it skips across the glass.

Any blade that’s chattering, streaking or doing a lousy job of wiping, therefore, is a blade that’s overdue for replacement. The same goes for any blade that is cracked, torn, nicked or otherwise damaged.

Checking Your Blades

A simple check is to try your windshield washers. If the blades are not in good condition, you’ll see why when they attempt to wipe the washer solvent off the glass. Streaking, chattering or any other problems will be clearly obvious.

This test also gives you the opportunity to check your windshield washer system. After you’ve checked the windshield wipers, check the rear wiper too if your vehicle has a rear wiper system. Many sport utility vehicles, vans, minivans, station wagons, hatchbacks and fastbacks do. After all, it’s just as important to see what’s behind you when backing up in the rain as it is to see what’s ahead. You can use the same test (try the rear windshield washer, if so equipped), or simply spray some water onto the glass with a squeeze bottle and see how the wiper performs.

Replacement Blades

You can usually replace wiper blades yourself, and can replace just the blade with a refill or the entire blade assembly. Refills will save you money. If you’re installing a blade assembly, most come with some type of adapter to fit the arms on your vehicle. The old blades pull or push off the arm by pressing a release button or pin on the wiper holder.

If you are replacing the blade only with a refill, the old blade can be removed by squeezing the locking tags in at the end of the blade so it will slip out of the holder. Make sure the replacement blade is the same length and claw width as the original. A blade that is too long may create interference problems, while one that is too short may not fit the holder.

For cold weather driving, you might consider installing a set of “winter blades” on your vehicle. These have an enclosed holder that prevents ice and snow from building up and interfering with the wiper’s ability to do its job.

Beware of buying your personal items like shampoos, toothpaste etc in bulk, Two reason for this, first of all you will get bored by the same fragrance or flavor. Secondly you may even forget that you have another pack under your bathroom sink and may end up buying another bulk pack! Savings: $75/month
2. Eat at Home, Everyday, Every time: This is not as difficult as it may seem. With so many ready to cook options available, you can easily come up with a delicious meal. The best thing is that you will know about what you are adding in your meal and this can help in maintaining your calories intake and your health. Saving $100/month (yes it does add up very quickly!)
3. Skip Latte: You must have heard this many items by now. But it makes sense. Instead of buying a tall latte at Starbuck for $3.90, you can either brew at home or buy at McDonalds for less than $1. savings : $50/month

According to the consumer reports, most of the modern cars can go for over 7,500 or even 10,000 miles between oil changes, when driven under normal conditions. They recommend to always checking your user manual to find out the best oil change interval for your car.

According to moneybluebook.com, the only experts that push for this are those from the oil industry. While it’s not exactly a scam per-se, it’s quite a lucrative myth for the engine oil maintenance industry. The average American drives 12,000 miles in a year, and with an oil change every 3,000 miles costing in excess of $25 each, that’s $100 annually for each customer. Every visit to the auto mechanic or oil change facility gives them yet another opportunity to push for other pricey maintenance services such as air filter replacement and transmission flush.

Moneybluebook website has an article from consumer report on the trial they conducted with New York Taxi Cab Consumer Reports to test engine oil performance in 1996. After examining the results, they concluded that:

Even in the severe driving conditions that a New York City taxi endures, we noted no benefit from changing the oil every 3,000 miles rather than every 6,000. If your driving falls into the “normal” service category, changing the oil every 7,500 miles (or at the automaker’s suggested intervals) should certainly provide adequate protection. (We recommend changing the oil filter with each oil change.)

Many owner’s manual also notes that if you only occasionally drive under the above severe condition, than you should follow the normal driving conditions maintenance schedule.

Bottom line: Check your owners’ manual before you take your car for an oil change!

Yesterday Yahoo.com reported the wackiest tax exemptions people are trying to put in their 2008 tax filings.

Here is the list of such amazingly and unthinkable tax exemptions, Enjoy and LOL

1. Sperm donation as a charity donation.
2. Toilet paper as business expenses.
3. Gynecologist visit as “repairs and maintenance”.
4. Underwater speakers, the mood lighting and the in-tub stereo – Medical expenses.
5. $50,000 wedding as a business expense.
6. Doggie day care.
7. Unwanted plants as donations.
8. 8,000 in dance lessons as medical expenses.
9. Dog as a dependent.
10. Dog food for his “home security system”.
11. Dog Fido as a landscaping subcontractor.

Although these looks to be a very funny list, it does brings our two important points.. First that people are creative and secondly, people are really desperate and are looking for alternatives. Especially in this kind of economy. I also feel sad for these people. These are good hard working people, whose intention is not to steal or cook up the data; they are simply looking for a loop hole in the system to save few hundred dollars.

I think that they are sill better than the executives at AIG and other big companies where they enjoy lavish bonuses and have team of CPA’s looking for exemptions and deductions.

People do nto think about their taxes or even expenses on daily, weekly or monthly basis. They simply get shocked when they see the credit card statement. At the time of taxes, it is already too late. The year is already gone and you can hardly do anything.

Every penny counts in today’s economy. Everyone should look for deals, coupons and other savings options. No more need to feel shy when you are handing out the 50 cent coupon to a grocery clerk. It is your money and you have the right to save it!

As the name says all, Competition tires are like people who love competition. They love to show off and show others that they can meet the challenge! Yokohama’s A032R is a popular choice among autocross racers. Among front-wheel drive enthusiasts, the BFGoodrich g-Force Drag Radial is often the choice for faster quarter mile times. While legal for the street, the racing compounds and virtually groove-free designs make these tires impractical for most users. Competition tires are specially designed for racing. A racing belt package that stiffens tread to maintain maximum contact patch under extreme steering response. They have drag slick designs that feature flexible sidewalls which maximize traction during acceleration

Muscle Man:
Tire Types for Trucks and SUVs or in other words fro our Muscle men! AP type tires are original equipment on many of today’s vehicles due to their smooth, quiet highway ride and good all-season traction. Mud Terrain tires commonly have tread designs that feature the largest possible block sizes and high void ratios for grip and durability under harsh off-road conditions. These tires love snow! Winter tires are more specialized than many people think. People often associate winter tires with old forms of snow tires that were loud, mounted on the rear of the vehicle and needed studs for traction when driving in icy conditions. Today’s technology has changed all that. Winter tires for cars and minivans are now applicable to a wide range of drivers and vehicle types. These drivers may encounter a wide range of potential winter conditions including snow, ice, slush, rain, and freezing rain. However, these tires remain applicable for dry highway conditions as well. A lack of winter tires poses a threat to safe driving when serious weather conditions suddenly arise. Because of the significant traction improvement of winter tires, especially in colder temperatures, they should only be used in sets of four. How many times have you received coupons for an auto service like an oil change, transmission repairs or for a brakes replacement? Do you wonder what to do with these coupons, should you keep them or discard them? Should you try new auto repair shops or should you stick with your old and known shop. Here are few thoughts to help you in making the right decision:

1. Regular maintenance coupons: Coupons for simple things like an oil change, serpentine belt replacement, tire rotation etc, are good to keep the coupon as these services do not require extreme technical capability and can be done satisfactorily by nearly all shops. The only thing you need to know is that the brand/ type of oil being used. Some of these auto maintenance services are easy for do-it-yourself services.
2. User feedback: Always check the feedback of the auto repair shop for which you have a coupon. Just because you will save few dollars does not mean that it is the best deal for you. In fact some of the so called money saving deals and coupons can turn out to be very expensive. Prundo does offer user feedback information. You can check the rating of the auto repair shop on Prundo’s website before you decide to take your car to them.
3. Coupons can be more expensive: You will not believe this. Once I saw a coupon for a smog check for only $5. I was amazed as all other shops were charging approx $45 for the smog check. How did this smog check shop offer such a ridiculous price? Well I started reading the fine print for ‘additional charges’. They were charging additional $8 for the certificate, $8 for transmitting the info to DMV(!), extra for this service, extra for that service etc. After I added all the cost, it came out to be $55!, which was $10 higher than any other shop with no coupons or special offer1
4. Keep them?!: How long can you plan to keep a coupon and then to remember it when you actually need it or even remember to discard it when it expires. This can be a difficult task as with Murphy’s law, you will always throw the coupon just one day before you need it! Well without talking more about prundo, we do provide that feature of having the coupon when you need it. Not before or after you need it.
5. More expensive is better?: This is not always true. If you take your car to a dealer, you will certainly pay extra for the routine services. Yes, you may want to take your car to a dealer for a major repair to ensure that only OEM parts are used. But for a simple tire rotation do you want to spend an additional $30 or for an oil change $50 more when you can get it done at half the price at a reputable auto repair shops and at half the time.
