News & Rants: Fourth of July Marks the Day With Most Vehicle Deaths

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

We here at MotherProof.com want to wish everyone a happy Independence Day, but we also remind you to stay safe behind the wheel during the holiday. The Fourth of July is the day with the most fatal crashes in the U.S., with an average of 148 deaths, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

An IIHS analysis of federal fatal crash data found that July 4, Aug. 13, July 15 and, unsurprisingly, Jan. 1 were the days when the most people died in motor vehicles during 2004-2008. For comparison’s sake, 114 people die in cars each day on average.

IIHS President Adrian Lund penned a press release reminding people to stay safe, but also, interestingly, knocked the sudden focus on distracted driving.

According to Lund, much attention has been given to texting and talking on a cell phone while driving, but cell phone and texting bans in states have shown little positive impact in reducing deaths. More importantly, Lund says, drivers need to slow down. We recommend doing both.

Stay safe and have a happy Fourth.

Reasons To Celebrate: Volvo Truck Sets Two Speed Records

On June 9, Boije Ovebrink set two new world speed records in — wait for it — a Volvo VN truck. A world speed record in a semi? We think that’s pretty cool.

Ovebrink, who turned 59 the same day, set the records in standing 500 and 1000-meter standing-start events. His average speeds of 130.862 kmh and 166.698 kmh, respectively, were enough to unseat the previous record holder. That skilled driver? Ovebrink himself.

According to a press release, Ovebrink nailed close to 250 kmh when he crossed the finish line. He has been working with Volvo to race a specialty truck, but thought he had an average velocity of 170 kmh to beat. Ovebrink’s test truck’s powerplant is a 16-liter Volvo engine that produces over 2000 horsepower. Enough for you?

“It feels amazing,” Ovebrink said. “It’s a great way to celebrate one’s birthday,”

That Was Fast: BMW Sells Out of 2011 Frozen Gray M3s

Well, we probably should have seen this coming. Within 15 minutes of BMW opening an order hotline, Bimmer diehards have snatched up all of the 30 available 2011 Frozen Gray M3s.

In a press release, BMW North America M brand manager Larry Koch lauded the Frozen Gray M3 as “a striking work of sculpture, speed, and style perfectly marks the 25th birthday of the M3 model,” and as “one of the most unique BMW vehicles ever imported” to America.

According to Koch, the 30 available special-edition M3s sold out yesterday within 12 minutes of the phone line opening at 11:30 a.m. Monday. Fifty alternate buyers were listed within an hour’s time.

As we described last week, Frozen Gray refers to a unique matte gray finish on the car’s exterior. The special edition model combines the Competition Package, cosmetic enhancements, and several key M3 accessories and options.

It’s unlikely that you’ll see one of the 30 Frozen Grays cruising around your neighborhood, so if you want to get up close, take a hint from the owners and try while you can.
