Snap Judgment: ‘70 Ford Mustang Boss 302 or ‘11 Boss 302
Snap Judgment

Today’s Snap Judgment is a judgment call that rings deeply within every one of us. Boss, meet the new Boss: would you rather have the original icon, or the updated soon-to-be-classic?

We’re not going to bore you with statistics today — go with your gut. The new Boss 302, which debuted at Pebble Beach, is arguably a track-ready Mustang that’s also street-legal, and could become an instant classic. But the classic itself, the Boss Mustang that annihilated Chevy Camaros and others alike in the early Seventies, continues as sacred among the faithful. After all, if it weren’t, why would Ford bother to resurrect the name?

Today’s Snap Judgment:

Would you rather have a ‘70 Boss 302 or the ‘11 Boss 302?

Yesterday at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering – a distinguished car show on the rarified greens of Quail Lodge Golf Course – Bugatti publically unveiled its new Veyron 16.4 Super Sport for the first time. Yes, the same car that reset the land speed record for a production car at 267.855 mph last month. And that’s even verified by the Guinness Book of World Records.

So what’s so special? Besides the top speed (which is limited to 258 in normal trim), what sets the Super Sport head and shoulders above the more plebian Veyrons? It’s got 1200 horsepower and 1106 pound-feet of torque, to start. Not many street-legal cars can give you those kind of sheer bragging rights. Lateral acceleration is claimed to be an eyeball-sucking 1.4g. The monocoque is constructed entirely from carbon fiber for reduced weight and the carbon body panels are more aerodynamic, with twin race-derived NACA ducts carved into the roof, new front air intakes, and a double diffuser exhaust system.

The first five Veyron 16.4 Super Sport models off the line will be World Record Edition variants, with the same black and orange livery as the record-setting car. According to Bugatti, 20 Super Sports have already been ordered as of today. The cost? Opt for the optional naked carbon fiber bodywork, and you’ll owe Bugatti a full 1.95 million euros before taxes (that’s a whopping $2.48 million). Makes sense then, that Bugatti would choose to showcase such a car at The Quail. Admission tickets to the attendance-limited event are $400 per person for an afternoon’s entertainment and sell out within days of being offered.

The Super Sport made its grand entrance at The Quail behind roughly 20 vintage Bugatti models.

Automakers can capitalize on their historic past by giving new life to old production models and concept cars. For a local festival in the United Kingdom, Vauxhall has breathed new energy into an already powerful muscle car of the 1960s, and pumped 3000 horsepower from its V-8.

Vauxhall on its side

You read that right. For the VXR Power Festival, Vauxhall has revived a historic model nameplate and given it awesome power. To announce its partnership with drag racing team Red Victor, Vauxhall tuned the 8.8-liter V-8 in a 1967 Victor FD to produce 3000 horsepower. Though still in development stages, the FD is rumored to complete the quarter-mile in just 6.5 seconds and achieve a top speed of 240 mph.

The Victor FD, which Vauxhall claims is street-legal, will make an appearance at the Festival during the last weekend of August. If the rejuvenated FD is any indication, this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship between Vaxuhall and Red Victor.
